A committee established under the latest social partnership agreement is due to publish two reports today on how Irish businesses adhere to equality legislation.

The Equal Opportunities Framework Committee was set up under the Sustaining Progress deal to help businesses introduce equality policies.

One of its reports deals specifically with small and medium-sized enterprises, whose approach to equality, according to the committee, tends be "reactive and informal".

The committee said many small firms lack knowledge of equality legislation and believe they cannot afford the time, expertise and cost that may be involved in introducing equality policies.
