Department of Social Protection admits sending Irish jobseekers letters about Canada jobs

The Department of Social Protection has confirmed that it is sending letters to jobseekers with offers of work in Canada.

However, they say the letters are "for information" only, and that there is no obligation on recipients to apply for the vacancy.

Hundreds of letters offering work in Canada have been sent - with others highlighting jobs available in other EU countries.

Jobseeker "Stephen" got such a letter yesterday - but says it was not the first time he was told of work abroad by someone in the dole office.

"'Did you know that there's a lot of work at the moment,' it goes, 'aboard, specifically, it says, in Malaysia deep-sea welding?'.

"And I just got a letter from the Department of Social Protection asking me would I be interested in a job over in Canada. A job, basically, as a drafter."
