The Limerick woman who won Europe’s largest ever-jackpot is the aunt of a convicted murderer, it emerged tonight.

Dolores McNamara, 50, from Garryowen in Limerick is known locally as a 'lovely woman' who has never been in trouble with the law.

But in 2003, her nephew Anthony ’Noddy’ McCarthy was one of five men convicted of the murder of a Limerick crime boss.

The then 21-year-old, from Fairgreen in Limerick, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder at the Central Criminal Court.

The killing was part of a long running and bloody feud among several Limerick families which led to stabbings, kidnappings, witness intimidation and collapsed trials.

During McCarthy’s murder trial, it emerged that he was armed with a handgun in a house, to which crime boss Kieran Keane and his nephew Owen Treacy, were lured to on false pretences.

After trying to get the two men to lure out another two potential victims, McCarthy and the other four men pushed them into a van and dumped them out in an isolated laneway.

Mr Keane was then shot dead by one of the gang, David ’Frogs Eyes’ Stanners, and his nephew was stabbed 17 times and left for dead.

However, he survived the attack and managed to testify in court against the five men.

McCarthy and the four other men were also convicted of the attempted murder of Mr Treacy and falsely imprisoning him and his uncle, Kieran Keane.

After he was convicted, McCarthy shouted to Keane’s relatives outside the court: “For every action there’s a reaction“.

Following the intensification of the feud in 2003, armed police were placed on the streets of certain housing estates in Limerick and extra resources were allocated.
