Gardaí are questioning a man following an incident in Co Galway where a woman was ordered from her car before the vehicle was stolen.

The car was later found crashed 25 kilometres away on the M18 motorway in Co Clare. A man was later detained near Limerick City.

The incident occurred at around 9.30pm last night in Gort. The woman was ordered out of her car but while left shaken, was otherwise uninjured.

Gardaí were alerted and began searching for the car and were later informed of a reported sighting on the M18 motorway.

At around 10.15pm, a car was reported to have crashed into a barrier on the flyover at junction 14 at Barefield near Ennis.

Gardaí and fire crews from Ennis raced to the scene but there was no sign of the driver.

The car was recovered and taken away for a technical examination while gardaí later located a man walking along the N18 dual-carriageway on the outskirts of Limerick City.

He was arrested and taken to Shannon garda station where he remains in custody.

Gardaí from Gort and Shannon are investigating the incident.
