Animal rights protestor Barry Horne died today after being on hunger strike since the summer, the British prison service said.

Horne, 49, was probably Britain’s best-known animal rights extremist and was serving 18 years in jail after being convicted of plotting a nationwide bombing campaign.

He had been at Long Lartin high security prison in Worcestershire until last Thursday, when he was admitted to hospital with liver problems.

The cause of death was liver failure, a prison service spokeswoman said.
