Villa fans plan Ellis protest

Aston Villa fans are set to go ahead with a demonstration against chairman Doug Ellis on Saturday despite the appointment of new manager David O’Leary.

Villa Fans Combined will protest for the removal of Ellis and finance director Mark Ansell and the group’s spokesman Jonathan Fear insists they have new investors ready to challenge for control.

The group have gained the support of former Villa star Dennis Mortimer and will meet at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Fear told the Daily Express: “This just seems another part of the two-and-a-half-year cycle managers seem to last with Villa.

“We wish O’Leary well. But unless the infrastructure is in place at the club to help him, then no manager can succeed. We do not believe that backing is there while Ellis and Ansell remain in charge.

“To us it looks like a cynical move to try and dilute the massive criticism of the board.

“I have to tell Ellis and Ansell it won’t work. The fans are not fooled by this. We are going ahead with our action and we intend to succeed.”
