A recently-fired shop worker shot a former colleague to death and then randomly opened fired on others near New York’s Empire State Building, police officials said.

The officials said eight other people were hit by bullets, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The gunman previously worked at a shop inside the iconic skyscraper at the heart of Manhattan, the officials added.

The shooting happened at about 9am local time (2pm Irish time) today.

Federal officials say the shooting was not related to terrorism.
