Armed with a vacuum cleaner and an extension cord, a thief drilled a small hole in a Danish jewellery shop window and sucked out goods worth more than €12,000 without setting off the alarm.

Police in Koldingm said a power socket in a nearby construction site provided electricity for the vacuum cleaner which was abandoned at the scene of the crime.

“We discovered it when we came to work in the morning,” said Kirsten Lykke Salling, the owner of the Gold and Silver store. “It was terrible but at the same time funny because who would have thought of doing it that way.”

She said the thief had sucked up small items including rings, necklaces and earrings.
