The number of students dropping out of secondary school has failed to improve over the past 10 years, according to a study by the ESRI.

The organisation says current drop-out rates are similar to those in the early 1990s.

Most of those who decide not to sit the Leaving Cert cite school-related factors as their reason for leaving.

The ESRI says this means they may find schoolwork difficult or may have difficulties with their teachers or their peers.

The other main reason for dropping out is to take up employment.
