A woman involved in a car crash has died despite being given first aid by striking firefighters in Northern Ireland, it emerged today.

The victim, aged in her 30s, was driving a car which collided with a parked vehicle on the main street of Cushendall, Co Antrim.

Firefighters rushed from their picket line to give her first aid following the accident last night, but she died later in hospital.

Malachy Jameson of the Northern Ireland Fire Service said there had been no debate among his men.

“On humanitarian grounds we have to turn out. That’s what we are taught, we are trained that way and we automatically just went,” he said.

“That’s what we do, that’s what we are good at.”

Since the strike began 114 emergency calls have been made in Northern Ireland. Out of those 48 were genuine, 25 were hoaxes and the rest false alarms.
