Man attempts to stab Finnish PM
A knifeman has tried to stab Finland’s Prime Minister while he was out campaigning.
Security guards were able to stop him before he could reach Jyrki Katainen.
The attempted attack occurred in the city of Turku, where Mr Katainen was campaigning ahead of Sunday’s municipal elections.
A government spokesman said said the Prime Minister was not hurt.
“The man was stopped before he reached the Prime Minister. He didn't have time to stab him,”Kari Mokko, a government spokesman said.
Robert Seger, a Finnish newspaper photographer who witnessed the incident, later said that the man dropped to his knees in front of Mr Katainen, holding a knife, but did not attack him.
“He was trying to get Katainen’s attention,” Seger said.
The government’s security chief Timo Harkonen said that the Prime Minister’s security contingent “prevented it from becoming a dangerous situation.”
