An Italian woman plunged to her death from the Leaning Tower of Pisa in an apparent suicide as tourists watched in horror, police said.
The woman, 61, came from the hamlet of San Giuliano, near Pisa.
She bought a visitor’s ticket and then left her purse and identity documents in one of the downstairs lockers, police said.
When she had climbed to the highest tier of the 180ft tall monument, the woman jumped, according to police.
She had been suffering from an illness for a long time, they added.
The monument was reopened to the public a year ago after a decade-long project to reverse some of its tilt.
