The Government is due to unveil its latest National Development Plan amid much fanfare later today.

The document will outline a massive €180bn worth of infrastructure projects and other developments over the next seven years.

€50bn is expected to be spent on children's programmes and services for the elderly, while €13bn will be earmarked for third-level education and €20bn will be pumped into developing science and enterprise.

Elsewhere, €2bn will be set aside for social and affordable housing.

The plan is being unveiled in the run-up to this year's general elections and cynics are likely to accuse the Fianna Fáil-PD coalition of using it as a means of buying votes.
