A priest who marched in a gay pride parade opposed by the Vatican, has been removed from his parish in southern Italy.

Father Vitaliano Della Sala said he planned to appeal to the Vatican his removal by the local bishop, Abbot Tarcisio Nazzaro.

He had marched in the parade, attended by tens of thousands of homosexuals and supporters, in July 2000.

"It seems unfair. A priest must defend the rights of those who are trampled upon," said Fr Della Sala.
