A gunman wounded a soldier and a security guard at the entrance to Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace today, before engaging in a shoot-out with Turkish police inside the palace courtyard, witnesses said.

An Associated Press Television editor at the scene said multiple gunshots were heard from behind the high walls of the palace, which is opposite the Blue Mosque.

Initial reports said the attack happened outside the Blue Mosque.

NTV television, citing police, said the gunman initially agreed to surrender but then began firing on police forces.

A picture showed the man heavily armed with at least two rifles before the attack.
