Foreign Ministers regret Nice vote

EU Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg say they regret the decision of the Irish people in last Thurday’s referendum on the Nice Treaty.

EU Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg say they regret the decision of the Irish people in last Thurday’s referendum on the Nice Treaty.

In a statement after their meeting, the other 14 member states once again excluded any "reopening of the text signed in Nice".

They insist the ratification process will continue in accordance with the agreed timetable.

The Ministers also noted that the Irish Government is deeply and firmly committed to the European Union and to the ratification of the treaty.

The 14 also expressed their readiness to contribute in every possible way to help the Government here to find a way forward.

This meeting will pave the way for an EU summit next weekend, which will be attended by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and senior ministers.
