Turkish diplomats may be allowed to meet with the 15 British service personnel who were seized by Iran, a Turkish television station reported today.
CNN-Turk reported that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had met Iranian Foreign Minister Minister Manouchehr Mottaki before an Arab leaders summit meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was told Tehran may allow Turkish diplomats to meet with the navy crew.
Iranian military vessels surrounded and then captured 14 British servicemen and one servicewoman in the Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iraq and Iran, whose border lines there have long been disputed.
Iran insists the sailors were in Iranian waters and has accused them of “aggression” into Iranian territory.
