Israel’s military launched a spy satellite towards space this morning to keep track of developments in Iran, Israeli Radio reported.

The launch was carried out at 2.40am (12.40am Irish time), the radio reported. It was not immediately known if the launch was successful.

According to the report, the satellite was named Ofek 7. It is to replace Ofek 5, which has been orbiting for almost five years.

Ofek 5’s life had to be extended when the launch of its planned replacement, Ofek 6, failed two years ago.

Israel is concerned that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon and has labelled Iran as its most serious strategic threat.
