Blackburn midfielder Jonathon Douglas is relishing the challenge of competing for a regular starting role with the Ewood Park club after signing a new three-year deal.
The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder revealed “there was never any doubt” about him leaving the club despite speculation over his future.
Douglas said: “Hopefully I will be able to get involved more, I started playing towards the end of the last season and if I can keep injury free and keep working hard then I will be able to play the games I really want to play.
“Nobody wants to be sitting in the bench or in the stands, but it’s the gaffer who picks the side and if I’m not in it there’s no point in crying about it, I’ve just got to work even harder and hopefully I’ll be given a chance.”
With the expected return from injury of David Thompson and Barry Ferguson, Douglas faces a tough task to land a regular starting role.
“It’s great for the club that they are both going to be fit for the beginning of the season, it’s like two new signings for us with them being out for so long,” Douglas told the club website, www.rovers.premiumtv.co.uk.
“The competition for midfield will increase but if I work hard at my game then hopefully the gaffer will give me the nod.”
