The State Pathologist is due in Limerick to conduct a post mortem on the body of a man who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Garryowen on Saturday.

The victim has been named locally as Mark Moloney, a single man in his 30's and from Garryowen.

The incident is believed to be linked to ongoing criminal activity in the city.

Mark Moloney's body was removed from the scene of the shooting, to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle late on Saturday night.

He was shot dead at 2.45pm by the passenger of a car that fled in the direction of Tipperary.

Gardaí believe a black Toyota Celica that was later found burned out in Drombanna was used in the attack.

Last night they spoke with a number of suspects asking them to account for their movements and say they are following a number of lines of inquiry.
