Hot Weld faces 10 rivals as he bids for an unprecedented big-race double in tomorrow’s Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown.
Ferdy Murphy’s eight-year-old is aiming to follow up on last Saturday’s Scottish Grand National win with victory in the three-mile-five-furlong feature at the Esher venue.
If he can bag the Grade Three prize, Hot Weld will be the first horse to take both races in the same season.
The James Fanshawe-trained Reveillez leads the opposition as he steps up in trip again after winning over three miles and a furlong at Aintree.
Henry Daly’s Alderburn is another leading fancy to stand his ground, while Paul Nicholls fields My Will, Cornish Sett and Sweet Diversion as he chases a landmark £3m (€4.4m) in total prize-money this season.
Juveigneur represents Nicky Henderson, while Philip Hobbs fields luckless Grand National runner Zabenz.
The line-up is completed by Wee Robbie, Irish raider Jack High and likely outsider Cowboyboots.
Murphy knows the weight of history is against Hot Weld completing his double and rates Reveillez and Alderburn as main dangers.
“We are very much looking forward to it but the statistics are against us,” said Murphy.
“We would have preferred another couple of furlongs as he is proven over extreme trips, but he quickened down the back at Ayr so hopefully that won’t be too much of a problem.
“I don’t think we will be as bold with him as at Sandown as it’s just not that sort of track but I’ll leave it up to Graham (Lee).
“I think AP (McCoy)’s horse (Reveillez) is the one we have to beat but Henry Daly’s (Alderburn) would be a danger as well. He goes up 17lb for his next run so on paper he is 6lb ’well in’ so I’ve got to be happy with that.”
