The United States has confirmed that the Taliban’s former Ambassador to Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, has been handed over and is in the custody of US officials in Afghanistan.

Mullah Zaeef, who became the Taliban’s only contact with the outside world during the early stages of the war in Afghanistan, was arrested in Pakistan last week.

A man suspected of operating al Qaida training camps in Afghanistan, Ibn al-Shayk al-Libi, is also in US custody after being handed over by the anti-Taliban forces who seized power in the country last year.

The US hopes its two new prisoners will provide information about Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden’s al Qaida network, which the US has accused of masterminding the attacks of September 11th.
