A drink driver escaped prosecution in Kazakhstan today because he had been tippling on fermented horse milk, not beer or spirits.
Fermented mare’s milk, or kumys, is not legally listed as an alcoholic beverage in the country, although it can have an alcohol content of up to 4%.
The drink is widely popular in Kazakhstan and is believed to have health-boosting properties.
In court, the man, identified only as R. Iskendirov, said he had drunk about 1.5 litres of kumys for medicinal purposes before getting behind the wheel in June.
He was stripped of his license after the arrest on suspicion that he was drunk on beer.
