€111m saved in crackdown on social welfare fraud

The Department of Social and Family Affairs has saved €111m in the first three months of this year as part of a crackdown on social welfare fraud, according to figures released by the department today.

The Department of Social and Family Affairs has saved €111m in the first three months of this year as part of a crackdown on social welfare fraud, according to figures released by the department today.

€35m of the total related to payments to one-parent families, while €30m related to false claims for unemployment benefit.

Minister Mary Coughlan said the crackdown on fraudulent payments was designed to ensure that social welfare benefits went to people who needed them.
