A Canadian woman punched a black bear in the nose to save her dog.

Brooke Collins struck the beast after it had scooped up her pooch Fudge in its paws when the canine was playing in her garden and the 22-year-old hairdresser was even cut by the huge animal after hitting it.

She explained: "I was screaming to startle the bear and ran up to it thinking if I got close to it, it would run off, but I got within inches and it still wouldn't go, so I punched it in the nose.

"I remembered hearing that if you punch a shark in the nose it'll go away, and so I punched it in the nose. I love my dog. Nobody could watch their pet die."

Fudge was in such shock after the incident that he bit Brooke on the chin when she was carrying him back inside, before her boyfriend chased the bear off into nearby woods.
