A McDonalds restaurant in Belfast has been fined stg£20,000 over the death of a student who was electrocuted by a hand dryer.

22-year-old Ciara McGinley was killed after touching the damaged dryer, from which live wires were hanging, in the McDonalds toilet at Bradbury Place in 1998. She was celebrating the end of her exams at the time.

In court today, the judge said the staff had failed to act on three complaints about the dryer in the weeks before the accident. On one occasion, a woman complained she got an electric shock but it went unnoticed.

The restaurant was fined for endangering both staff and customers.
