The suspected bomber who tried to detonate explosives in his training shoes during a transatlantic flight on a US airliner appeared in a Boston court today.
The 28-year-old man, who boarded the Paris to Miami US Airlines flight using a British passport in the name Richard Reid, faced holding charges of intimidation or assault of a flight crew causing interference with their duties. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted.
Wearing orange prison garb and shoulder-length hair, Reid spoke in a quiet voice during his ten minute appearance before magistrate Judith Dein.
He answered ‘‘Yes’’ And nodded his head when Dein asked if he understood the charge against him and whether he wanted a lawyer.
He was remanded in custody until later this week.
