A young girl found in a street was in care in Britain today as police tried to trace her parents.

The youngster – aged around two – was found in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, late last night, police said.

Officers said anyone with information about the toddler – who is black, has long, plaited hair and does not appear to speak English – should contact police.

“A member of the public alerted police to the girl who was in Genesta Road near to Valkyrie Road just before 11pm,” said a police spokeswoman.

“She is black, does not appear to speak English, and was dressed in purple leggings, a top and jacket and has long, plaited hair.

“Police made house-to-house inquiries in the area but no information was gleaned to identify the girl or her parents.

“She was placed overnight in the care of social services.”
