An overnight fire has caused hundreds of thousands of euro worth of damage to a golf club near Blarney in Co Cork.

Fire-fighters were dispatched to Muskerry Golf Club shortly before 9pm following reports that a number of golf carts were ablaze.

The fire subsequently spread to the gas mains and adjoining buildings, including the clubhouse.

Seven fire crews from Cork city and county battled the blaze, which they managed to get under control after the gas mains were turned off.

At least one member of staff was in the building when the fire broke out, but escaped injury.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are due to get underway this morning.
