HSA welcomes Smurfit fine

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has welcomed the record fine imposed on Smurfit News Press Ltd today in relation to two accidents at the company's plant in Kells, Co Meath.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has welcomed the record fine imposed on Smurfit News Press Ltd today in relation to two accidents at the company's plant in Kells, Co Meath.

Trim Circuit Criminal Court fined the company €1m for breaching health and safety regulations in relation to the two accidents, one of which resulted in a worker having his leg amputated.

The Health and Safety Authority has described the fine as a milestone and said it was a welcome sign that the courts were taking breaches seriously.
