The British Embassy in Ireland has hit out at Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny after he called on the Government to declare an immediate and unconditional war on the British nuclear industry.
Mr Kenny said British Nuclear Fuels, the company which runs Sellafield, cannot be trusted and he criticised the Government for failing to vigorously campaign against the company.
In a statement released this evening, the British Embassy said it was disappointed by the language used by the Fine Gael leader.
"We recognise the concerns of people in Ireland . . . but what is needed is a sensible debate based on the scientific facts and relevant international standards, with which the UK complies," the statement said.
It added that the closure of Sellafield would be irresponsible because the plant is engaged in the safe management of Britain’s nuclear legacy.
