More than one in five children has gone to bed or to school hungry, according to a new report.

The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey for 2010 found 21% of nine- to 18-year-olds were going hungry, an increase from 17% in 2006.

More than 16,000 children from 256 schools across Ireland participated in the survey.

The report also had some good news, with one third of children saying they felt in excellent health, half felt very happy and more than three quarters reported a high life-satisfaction.

Overall, the report also shows a decrease from 2006 in reports of tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use among schoolchildren in Ireland.
