A major battle is underway in the Southern Philippines against the Abu Sayyaf group.

Troops are pursuing the leaders of the al Qaida linked groups, and are reported to have overrun four Abu Sayyaf camps.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has vowed to crush the group, responsible for mass kidnappings and murders.

Abu Sayyaf's most recent abduction stretched over a year and involved 102 hostages at various times, including an American missionary couple held since May 27, 2001.
