A parcel bomb has exploded in front of a Madrid bank, injuring at least 10 people.

Those hurt include a retired general and witnesses say the bomb has caused extensive damage.

The explosion occurred outside the Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria bank in Calle Lopez de Hoyes in the centre of the city.

Former General Justo Oreja Pedraza is among the injured.

Three people are reported to be in a serious condition.

No-one has claimed responsibility, but police have blamed the Basque separatist group Eta.

Eta has claimed responsibility for 31 killings since it ended a 14-month ceasefire in December 1999.

Overall, its 33-year-old campaign for an independent Basque homeland straddling northern Spain and south-west France has led to about 800 deaths.
