Taxpayer may have to cover Aer Lingus

The Irish taxpayer may be asked to cover the cost if a row between airline companies and their insurers over the withdrawal of war risk liability insurance is not resolved.

The Irish taxpayer may be asked to cover the cost if a row between airline companies and their insurers over the withdrawal of war risk liability insurance is not resolved.

The insurance underwriters want to withdraw their cover for airlines next Tuesday because of last week’s terrorist attacks and the increasing likelihood of a war breaking out.

If insurance cannot be secured the Irish Government may be forced to pay for any losses incurred on Irish flights.

Aer Lingus says that it is confident that all flights that are scheduled for next Tuesday will go ahead and that it is maintaining its pressure on the insurance companies to reverse their decision.
