A car filled with explosives rammed a US government vehicle in north-west Pakistan today, killing two people and wounding five others.

Police officer Pervez Khan said the vehicle was attacked in Peshawar after it left the US consulate.

Mr Khan said some of the wounded were foreigners. The identities of those killed were unclear.

The attack happened in an area of Peshawar hosting several foreign organisations, including the United Nations.

Local TV footage showed an SUV at the site that was destroyed and burned.

The US embassy in Islamabad said it was investigating the report.

Peshawar is near Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country.

The city has been hit by scores of bombings in recent years, but attacks against American targets are relatively rare, probably because of the extensive security measures taken by the US government.
