SDLP leader Mark Durkan has hinted that his party might merge with one in the Republic at some time in the future.

Mr Durkan, who is also the North’s Deputy First Minister, did not say which party the SDLP might join, but predicted that such a move would be in line with a natural political realignment across the island of Ireland.

He said that if the SDLP did decide on a merger, there would be more than one potential partner as his party.
