Horse Racing: Bailey in Wonderland

Improving chaser Wonder Weasel can continue his progress with victory in the £70,000 (€114,790) Singer & Friedlander National Trial at Uttoxeter tomorrow.

Improving chaser Wonder Weasel can continue his progress with victory in the £70,000 (€114,790) Singer & Friedlander National Trial at Uttoxeter tomorrow.

Kim Bailey’s lightly-raced nine-year-old has proved himself better than ever this season and, following a fifth place at Kempton on his reappearance, the gelding has won twice at Haydock Park.

At the beginning of December Wonder Weasel shouldered 12st to a 21-length success over Mickthecutaway and he then followed up four weeks later when he gave a stone and a one and a quarter length beating to subsequent winner Radiation, after leading at the last and staying on gamely.

He races off a mark 5lb higher tomorrow but the trip of three and a half miles should bring out the required improvement from this out-and-out stayer, who is made the nap selection to lift the valuable contest.

Landing Light can boost his already sound Smurfit Champion Hurdle claims with a win in his Cheltenham prep-race at Sandown.

Nicky Henderson’s seven-year-old has won both his starts this season, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle and the Pertemps Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.

At Kempton he won despite the track being too sharp for him and the ground being faster than ideal.

He looked in trouble on the turn for home but produced a telling burst of speed between the last two flights to take control and, finishing strongly, landed the prize by two and a half lengths from Bilboa.

Landing Light has already shown his liking for Sandown, having won the Coral Eurobet Championship Hurdle there in April and, with soft going forecast tomorrow, everything points to another success.

The £40,000 (€65,500) Tote Scoop6 Sandown Handicap Hurdle can go to Kings Castle.

The Ron Hodges-trained gelding has won three of his last four starts but at a cost as he has risen 31lb in the ratings for victories gained at Wincanton, Aintree and Warwick.

Last time at Warwick he showed no ill effects from a broken blood vessel on his previous outing when sauntering clear from the second-last flight to beat Spendid by four lengths.

Kings Castle is clearly still on the upgrade and is worth taking a chance with tomorrow to defy the handicapper once again.

Burning Impulse can book his ticket for the Cheltenham Festival by landing the Ripley Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle.

Paul Webber’s four-year-old cost £120,000 (€196,800) out of Jeremy Noseda’s yard in the autumn and went some way to repaying that outlay when scoring in good style at Kempton last month, beating the French-trained Domirome by four lengths.

Burning Impulse will have come on for that experience and could develop into a leading contender for the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

Mary Reveley’s smart bumper winner Tees Components can make a successful debut under Flat rules on the Polytrack at Lingfield.

Tees Components has won four of his five starts in bumpers - showing a good turn of foot on more than one occasion - and will hold too many guns for his rivals tomorrow.
