The Irish Council for Social Housing has rejected the notion that housing estates containing a mix of social, affordable and private dwellings are unworkable.
Critics have claimed that such developments will lead to conflict between the residents of the various different types of housing.
However, the ICSH said research had found that, while there was little interaction between the different residents, there was also little evidence of any conflict.
The council has used the research to urge the Government to ensure that at least 20% of all new housing is used for social and affordable housing.
Under the law, builders are required to ensure that one-fifth of all new developments are used for social and affordable houses, but they also have the option to instead hand over money or land to the State or to build the social houses at a different location.
The ICSH said the best option would be to ensure that future developments include a mixture of the different types of housing in order to promote greater integration.
