Tony Martin believes the key to Leg Spinner’s improvement in form to land the Cesarewitch at Newmarket on Saturday can be attributed to the ground drying out.
After winning the Shergar Cup Stayers event under Yutake Take, he was sent off a short-price favourite for a hurdle race at Listowel, but disappointed badly.
And Martin, who will forever be linked with landing monster gambles in huge handicaps, is not surprised the punters deserted the six-year-old somewhat in allowing him to be sent off at 14-1.
“After Ascot we were very happy with him but he then went on to Listowel and we thought he was in good form but he ran very badly and he came home not the best,” said Martin.
“We gave him a few weeks off and he came round. Lucky enough in the last week we realised he was coming back in to the sort of form as before and we were very happy with him.
“We were lucky enough that the ground dried out in time and we came up with the right result.
“A lot of people were very disappointed after Listowel and there wasn’t much confidence in him, especially when the ground went against him earlier in the week.
“I was very pleased for the owner as he has been with me from the start and I’m delighted for him that it all worked out,” he told At The Races.
