The free legal advice centre FLAC has called on the Government to put a comprehensive debt settlement system in place to help thousands of people struggling to pay their debts.

The organisation's annual report for 2010 - which is being published today - shows that 787 people contacted the service for advice about their debts last year.

The figure is a 400% increase over a four-year period.

Director general of FLAC Noeline Blackwell said that people should be able to have all of their debts looked at "in one holistic overview", and not debt-by-debt.

FLAC said it received almost 11,000 queries in total last year at almost 90 legal advice centres nationwide, in addition to almost 10,000 telephone calls.
