Cigarettes responsible for 40% of fire deaths, says NSC

Thirty-nine people died in domestic fires last year, according to figures published today by the National Safety Council, with cigarettes the main cause.

Thirty-nine people died in domestic fires last year, according to figures published today by the National Safety Council.

The council said cigarettes were the cause of almost two-in-five house fires during 2004.

It also said most fires broke out at night, most victims were over 60 and, in most instances, the houses affected had no working smoke alarm.
