Pakistan opposition leader Imran Khan appeared at a student demonstration against emergency rule before being promptly detained by police, his party said today.

Some 200 students cheered wildly and lifted Khan into the air when the former cricket star appeared on a university campus in the eastern city of Lahore.

Seconds later, men in plainclothes grabbed him and hustled him into a nearby building.

Talath Naqvi, a spokeswoman for a local branch of Khan’s party, said Khan was being held by police.
