The Labour Party has told an Oireachtas committee that the Government should speed up its capital spending programme to improve the standard of primary school buildings throughout Ireland.

Party spokesman Michael Bell said many primary schools have no proper toilet facilities.

Last year, the Irish National Teachers Organisation published a list of more than 70 national schools in urgent need of renovation.
