A family of seven escaped injury when a pipe bomb exploded at a house in Derry this morning.

The blast caused damage to a car and the front of the address in Spruce Meadows shortly before 1.30am.

Two adults and five children were in the property at the time, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Army technical officers examined the scene and removed the remains of the device for further examination. Nearby houses were evacuated for a short time.

Detectives appealed for anybody with information to contact them.

Police are investigating a link to drugs. A group calling itself Republican Action Against Drugs has targeted at least 15 men in the city in recent months.

There were separate claims that a gang threw a device at a house in Westland Street near Derry city centre last night and that the device had partially exploded.

A police spokesman said: “We are advising people in the area to exercise caution and not to touch any unusual or suspicious items.”
