David Gillick powered through his 400 metres heat in first place in a time of 46.72 seconds at the World Indoor Championships in Doha this morning.
The two-time European indoor champion and the rest of the field were forced to change pace when a badly placed pole vault implement impeded the inside lane in the closing stages of the race.
Fellow Irishman Brian Gregan failed to qualify despite coming third in his race clocking 47.26sec as American Jamaal Torrance posted the fastest time of the rounds of 46.70sec.
Ireland’s David McCarthy was eliminated in the Men’s 800m heats despite achieving a season’s best of 1:51.88.
Deirdre Ryan failed to qualify from the Women’s High Jump qualification rounds with a best jump of 1.85m.
Gillick said: “At the world championships it is always a tough one especially in the morning. My goal was a top two and to control the race.”
“Coming from the last bend everyone had to get out a little bit as we caught by surprise by a pole that was sticking out.
“Hopefully I’ve earned an outside lane for the evening.”
