Former South African President Nelson Mandela is at a Johannesburg hospital for what his office says are routine tests.

Mandela has regular hospital check-ups, but his latest visit extended into an unusual overnight stay – and has attracted extraordinary media attention.

Journalists were standing outside the hospital today, watching relatives and friends enter for visits.

South African President Jacob Zuma’s office is cautioning reporters not to put pressure on Mandela’s doctors, and to give him “the respect that he is entitled to”.

A statement from the president’s office adds Zuma is being updated on Mandela while at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.
