11 killed in Georgian bus crash
A bus crash in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia killed 11 people, including two children, and left 14 hurt today, a Russian news agency reported.
The bus, with 24 passengers aboard, tumbled down a ravine as it traversed the high-altitude Transcaucasian Highway, which links southern Russia with the Moscow-backed separatist region, ITAR Tass said.
The bus was going from the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz to South Ossetia’s capital, Tskhinvali, the news agency said.
South Ossetia and another Georgian province, Abkhazia, proclaimed independence following the brief Russian-Georgian war in August 2008.
Only Russia and three other countries recognise the regions as independent.
