A street festival in Hamburg ended in disturbances this morning that left 15 people injured and nearly 40 arrested, police said.

The festival in the port city's St Pauli district went peacefully until late last night, when a rubbish bin was set alight and other barricades were put up and set on fire, police said in a statement.

Authorities then cleared the area using water cannon and put out several fires, police said. Officers were pelted with bottles and other objects.

Fifteen people, including eight police officers, were injured. In all, 38 people were briefly detained, most on suspicion of disturbing the peace.

The same district saw disturbances in late May ahead of the German-hosted Group of Eight summit.
