Alistair Cragg has smashed Mark Carroll's Irish 10,000m record by seven seconds.

Alistair Cragg has smashed Mark Carroll's Irish 10,000m record by seven seconds.

Cragg ran 27 minutes 39.55 seconds to finish fourth overall at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford University in the US against some of the world's top runners over that distance.

This is a huge boost for the Clonliffe Harriers runner, who is currently based at the University of Arkansas, following his disappointing showing at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham earlier this year.

There were two other Irish athletes competing in the same race: Mullingar runner Martin Fagan had a new personal best as he recorded a time of 28.18.30 finishing 24th, while Mark Kenneally finished 29th in a time of 28.55.49.
